I try to combine creative, fun ways to practice needed repetitive target movements. Therapy is based in Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing Methods for maximum feedback, practice and retention. Helping children with apraxia understand the what and why of apraxia is important to their success and motivation.
I have served several students with apraxia within the school setting for the past 6 years who have had varying degrees of apraxia. I have been trained by Dr. Edythe Strand in Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing in New York City. I have attended the Apraxia Kids annual conference and presented to other SLPs in my school district on apraxia, as well as offering my services to them as a resource on Childhood Apraxia of Speech. I've also attended the Nancy Kauffman seminar in Denver Colorado.
If parents are willing, I can train them on how to practice target words and sounds with their children outside of school. This involves creating a useful list of targets that a student wants to say at home. Experience books and stories can also be useful for practice. High levels of repetitions are key to improving accuracy of movements needed to improve speech.
ACC can be a helpful tool to prevent frustration, improve language skills and serve as a bridge for students who are working to improve their verbal skills. It's wonderful for students to have a way to express themselves through ACC. As they become more verbal, sometimes can be ACC faded out.
