Holistic learning. Speech does not develop in isolation and apraxia can impact many areas of development (social-emotional, behavioral, language, regulation, etc.). I have extensive post-graduate training on evidence-based practice for children with apraxia including multi-sensory approaches, ReST, DTTC, AAC, and more. I am able to utilize these methods as appropriate for each child, including individualized hybrid models as needed. Aside from my apraxia-specific training and knowledge, I have advanced training on global child development and supporting a child and family’s mental health and well-being. This broad knowledge and 18 years of experience has enabled me to help many children improve both their speech production & their self-confidence for successful communication interactions with others. My personal philosophy is to always support a child’s emotional well-being through the speech therapy process. I do this by building off each child’s unique strengths. With a strengths-based model (vs. deficit based) children experience some immediate success with communication and their internal (intrinsic) motivation fuels their progress. My knowledge of apraxia allows me to use the approaches that will be most effective for each child in terms of: cueing hierarchy, mass vs. dispersed trials, target words, fading/generalization, frequency, duration, etc.
Much of my community involvement includes parent education and consultation with agencies/schools/organizations. I provide supervision to green therapists and I work closely with other SLPs to support our community of practice for enriching children’s effective communication. I am actively involved in apraxia groups on social media and I continue to advance my CAS knowledge through ongoing professional development opportunities. I provide resources, education, and support to families of children with CAS.
As a mother myself, I understand that every parent has expert-knowledge and a unique relationship with their child. I use a growth-mindset to learn as much as I can about a family’s priorities and their child’s communication strengths and needs. I encourage parent input, joint problem solving, reflection, home-practice, and collaboration as a way to support every child’s progress and development. I am a national guest speaker on “parent-coaching.” My knowledge on how children AND adults learn, has allowed me to teach and collaborate with parents through our partnership and common goal (your child’s communication success).
I often use simple core boards, visual schedules, visuals to go with songs, favorite books, etc. I'm not an AAC expert, so I will typically refer out to an AAC specialist when this is needed. I use visuals primarily to lower frustration and provide an additional visual cue as needed. I also incorporate signs and movement gestures in therapy. Very often specific signs may not stick, but motor movements and tactile cues paired with sounds have been very helpful! Many of my clients also use high-tech AAC to support their language development.
