I choose a small number of words that are relevant to your child's specific routine, that also follow the appropriate motor pattern for your child, and work directly on those targets to help your child develop that specific motor pattern. I have participated in DTTC and PROMPT training and use these techniques throughout therapy based on how your child responds to the cues. I provide small breaks for your child to participate in an activity of his/her choosing for our interactions to be enjoyable for your child.
I have worked with individuals in the Apraxia community throughout my career as an SLP. I am always open/willing to learn new techniques or participate in new trainings that will assist with increasing my knowledge on how best to serve my students with increasing their verbal communication skills.
I always request parental involvement in choosing target words for therapy so the chosen words are functional to the child's routine. I also provide explanations to parents regarding the techniques used in therapy for understanding as to why repetition and accuracy are key to increasing skills during treatment. I also make myself as accessible as possible for parents to ask questions outside of treatment.
I think it is very important to provide the child with some form of communication system while acquiring verbal communication skills. I collaborate with the parents to determine what kind of AAC would be most functional for their child's routine and teach the parent how to implement the AAC system at home. Depending on the parent's comfort level and/or willingness to implement AAC at home, I decide whether high or low tech AAC is best for the family and follow the appropriate steps from there to provide the decided upon option for the family.
