My mission is to establish a foundation of trust with every child & family I work with - no matter the diagnosis. To me, this continuous and collaborative process is fundamental in order to maximize growth and generalization of skills across settings. I empower my clients to persevere through challenging tasks by prioritizing positive relationship building and strengths-based approaches.
Specifically, when treating children with motor speech difficulties (including CAS), I provide:
- Intensive & highly individualized therapy that incorporates a number of methods based on principles of motor learning including Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing
- Behavior Specific Feedback to strengthen neural pathways for planning and programming speech movements
- A variety of multi-sensory cues aimed to develop the auditory feedback loop and promote retention/transfer of movement skills
My involvement in the apraxia community began in graduate school when I was first introduced to a veteran speech language pathologist, nationally recognized for her expertise in the area of CAS. Her mentorship led me to discover my own passion and drive to fiercely advocate for children with motor planning disorders and their families. After successfully teaching my first pre-verbal child to sequence sounds for conversational exchanges, my motivation to continue learning and incorporating CAS intervention methods really took off!
In my opinion, parent input and frequent collaboration is essential in order for a child to reach his or her highest potential. Parents know their child best, and I greatly value their partnership. A major component of my therapy process is to engage in family-centered practices characterized by mutual respect, honesty, and open communication in order to make decisions and set realistic goals.
I have extensive experience implementing both low & high tech AAC modalities for children with CAS. I provide low-tech visual supports for children to build comprehension while planning and programming target productions. I'm also well versed in multiple high-tech AAC applications, and often utilize these systems to strengthen auditory feedback, reinforce or expand upon target productions, and to provide additional visual cues for the child.
