Our therapy protocol emphasizes speech movements and syllable shapes, uses cues and prompts as needed, addresses prosody skills, provides appropriate feedback, and applies functionality to speech targets. Our comprehensive treatment approach is in accordance with the American Speech-Language–Hearing Association (ASHA) and the Apraxia Kids (formerly Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America [CASANA]) best practice protocols.
At Suburban Speech Center, our apraxia therapy program includes specific training to increase functional language in the home. Our speech-language pathologists will provide specific words and phrases to empower the child to attempt more speaking situations. The speech-language pathologist will then continue to refine and integrate the child’s speech-language skills.
Suburban Speech Center has raised money and donated to the annual run/walk sponsored by Apraxia Kids, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support, education and research for CAS.
An essential component of our therapy process is a strong home program to carryover treatment techniques for increased success. Parent/caregiver involvement is an important part of the therapeutic process. Each child is provided with a home exercise book that is stimulating and interactive. Parents and caregivers are integral parts of the home carryover program.
I have incorporated various different levels of AAC with my children who have CAS in order to ease frustration with not being able to communicate verbally as well as meet the child on their level of language competency. Using AAC paired with the treatment modalities for improving motor speech helps a child improve their motor plan for verbal output but also their "here and now" communication needs as well as language progression.
