My treatment approach is to provide education to the families regarding best practice for carryover at home. I encourage parents to join the therapy sessions which facilitates the greatest carryover. I ask parents to provide me with a list of family names and any other words that they feel is important to their child's daily needs. These words are incorporated and modified into the core words that will be utilized into the daily practice.
Therapy follows the PROMPT guidelines which systematically works through the various speech subsystems: tone, mandibular control, labial facial, etc. while incorporating appropriate cognitive, physical and social emotional goals and intervention.
As the child's speech motor movements improve I often assess the phonological patterns that have or have not been suppressed and then plan therapy using the Phonological Cycles Approach (Hodsen) in conjunction with PROMPT.
I am very active in learning online, going to conferences and learning from other providers via Facebook and other social media
They are invited to join and/or observe therapy sessions. Handouts and information is provided. Homework books are often used for practice with words that have been mastered.
I have used the Proloque2 on IPads with a few children. I also use sign language, picture and word boards for children who are first beginning to communicate using speech.
