After an initial phone conversation, we set up a time to meet and get to know your child. During that time, I select the appropriate motivators (toys, games) to keep your child's attention while we work on figuring out how your child uses sounds in combination and makes a motor plan. We use this information to guide the therapy process and make treatment recommendations.
During therapy, we use high frequency of productions paired with a fading cueing system (facial imitation, hand movements, body movements--or anything that works for your child!) to increase speech clarity of length of utterance. I work with you, your child, and the school environment to make sure that everyone is part of the team!
I serve as an advocate for local parents and children with apraxia of speech and have attended the Apraxia Conference.
As speech therapy is only a small portion of any week, parents are integral parts of the team. Most parents sit in on sessions to observe specific techniques and to select appropriate words for sessions, so that they can incorporate these tasks throughout the week. When parent involvement is not possible, short video recordings are provided to assist with carryover.
I am not very experienced with using AAC systems.
