At the Suburban Speech Center, our staff of licensed speech-language pathologists are well versed in the assessment and treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech. Our treatment protocol incorporates the principles of motor learning. Our therapy emphasizes speech movements and syllable shapes, uses cues and prompts as needed, addresses prosody skills, provides appropriate feedback, and applies functionality to speech targets. Specific techniques and methodologies include Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT), Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (KSLP), Prosodic Facilitation, Sounds In Motion program, and Integral Stimulation therapy.
Dr. Nancy Polow and the staff at Suburban Speech Center have been involved in the Childhood Apraxia of Speech community for the past twelve years through: providing public awareness to local pediatricians and allied health professionals; offering free speech-language screenings to over 200 preschools in New Jersey; sponsoring ASHA approved continuing education courses for staff and local practitioners (Suburban Speech Center is an ASHA approved CEU provider); participation in walks sponsored by the Apraxia Kids organization and local fundraisers; maintaining current best practices standards through continuing education.
Individual treatment sessions are supplemented with ongoing home exercises to assist in carryover of skills taught during treatment sessions. Exercises are demonstrated with parent/caregiver at the end of each session.
When a child requires augmentative communication, we provide low tech systems through PECS and picture communication boards. For those children requiring more sophisticated technology, we refer to a representative from a local company.
