I emphasize connection over compliance in every aspect of my work. I view each child holistically, considering not only their individual communication needs but also the strengths and priorities of their family. By building on what the child already does well, I create meaningful, functional opportunities for growth.
A typical session begins with a brief mood check-in with both the child and their parent or caregiver. This helps me tailor the session in real time—if a child is feeling tired, we may begin with movement-based activities; if they are dysregulated or upset, we focus first on emotional regulation and co-regulation. This flexibility allows me to meet the child where they are and set the stage for effective learning.
While I may be working directly with the child during sessions, my broader goal is to support communication across the entire family system. I select targets that are relevant to the child’s daily environments and meaningful interactions. Once goals are established, therapy is embedded within highly motivating, child-led activities to keep engagement high and make communication both enjoyable and purposeful.
Parents are always welcome to remain in the session to observe and participate, or to use that time for themselves, whatever best supports the family.
Parents are an essential part of my therapy process and are actively involved through direct, weekly coaching. Together, we identify one or two priority targets to focus on for carryover between sessions, ensuring practice is both manageable and meaningful within the family’s daily routines. I also guide parents in observing their child’s speech production, including the accuracy and consistency of movements. Using a simple rating scale, parents share whether they feel their child’s production has improved, remained the same, or become more challenging. This ongoing collaboration helps us make informed adjustments and supports progress beyond the therapy session.
I have extensive experience programming and customizing AAC systems to align with each child’s current skills, communication needs, and learning profile. I view AAC as a powerful tool to support language development while also empowering children to communicate more effectively and confidently across environments.
