I teach the sounds and words that are powerful for the child using visual, tactile, and auditory cueing based on Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC). I focus on being multi-sensory and using what is motivating to the child to achieve the correct repetitions and to advance language. I help children attend to the sound and feel of speech movements to improve communication.
I utilize opportunities in my experiences within the school and early intervention to collaborate with other professionals from various disciplines and educate about apraxia. I work to increase awareness of apraxia and refer families to articles, connect families together and refer to local events and activities.
By providing home based therapy, parents are always encouraged to participate in speech sessions as it provides opportunities to coach and empower them to help facilitate the changes needed. They learn hands on techniques and strategies that can be used during everyday activities. Parents supply their unique knowledge about the things that are most interesting, familiar and important to the child. They also relate how they communicate at home and with others, to help inform assessment results and guide the ongoing therapy sessions.
I have used low tech AAC with children with Apraxia, including picture cards and PECS to enhance immediate communication. I use sound cue cards and mouth positioning cards within therapy to help shape sounds.
