First and foremost, establishing a strong rapport, setting clear expectations regarding the structure and routine of therapy sessions to ensure adequate trials are achieved, and developing individualized and functional intervention targets are vital in setting each client up for success in intervention. I provide evidence-based approaches that are rooted in the principles of motor learning while maintaining an engaging learning environment through the use of child-led, play-based activities.
Parent involvement in CAS intervention is essential. I always ensure that parents receive sufficient education regarding the nature of CAS diagnosis and approach to CAS intervention prior to beginning intervention. Parents are more than welcome to sit in and observe sessions. I always provide consultations at the end of every session including feedback of client performance and suggestions for home practice throughout the week to promote generalization of skills. Caregiver input and questions are always encouraged!
I use all forms of AAC with children with CAS to assist each child in communicating their wants, needs, and ideas with increased success in conjunction with CAS intervention. Forms of AAC that I have implemented include gestures, sign language, low-tech visual supports and communication boards, iPad communication systems such as TouchChat and Proloquo2Go, and high-tech speech generating devices such as NovaChat.
