I have completed advanced training in Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) and incorporate these methods into my treatment. I also have been PROMPT trained and will often incorporate these learned tactile cues into my therapy to best support the individual child. My therapy is structured and functional. It is important that we provide numerous repetitions of targets to allow for motor learning. Target selection is also very important to me, as I believe it is best practice to choose words that are functional for the child. Kids are more motivated to practice and use words that mean something to them! Our therapy sessions are hard work, but I also work to incorporate some fun into the session by providing a personalized reinforcer centered around your child's interest.
I became interested in childhood apraxia of speech when I was blessed enough to have a clinical rotation with an apraxia specialist. I learned so much about apraxia and fell in love with the children that we were treating that worked so diligently on their speech targets. I have continued to stay current on apraxia research, always looking for new ways to best support these children and their families.
As a parent, I know that you want to do whatever you can to best help your child. At my clinic, I love to have parents present for the session. It allows them to see the effort their child is putting in, the types of cues that I am using, what works for their child, and to be there to celebrate the successes with us! I provide parents with target words for home with the tools they need to support their child and promote errorless learning.
While I know we all desire our children to use verbal speech, I believe AAC is an incredible tool for these patients with severe intelligibility difficulties. I always want to make it clear that we are not giving up on verbal speech. Instead, we are providing your child with a functional, effective way to communicate in the present. I have been trained in both the use of low-tech systems (PECS) and the use of speech-generating devices (LAMP). It is important to find the system that works best for the child and their individual needs.
