When I first meet a child with CAS I work closely with the whole family to help determine meaningful goals for their child. Speech therapy sessions are play-based, child-led, and backed by current research. During our fun and engaging sessions, we will focus on high-frequency, meaningful words/phrases that are incorporated into a variety of games, toys, and motor-based activities.
Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a particular area of interest for me and I enjoy working closely and educating families on CAS and the apraxia community. I have participated in the Walk for Apraxia in the past and look forward to growing my involvement in the Apraxia community.
Parents are an integral part of their child's treatment for CAS. They are invited to observe their child's session and/or are provided specific verbal feedback for the last 5-10 minutes of their child's session. Through this observation and teaching, parents are equipped to assist their child in their home-practice to encourage carryover.
AAC can be an incredibly important tool for children with CAS. Depending on a child's current level of functional communication, I will work with the family to establish immediate means of communication through signs, low-tech core boards or topic boards, or high-tech AAC devices. Building language skills and establishing functional communication are critical for a child's confidence and independence.
