Every child with CAS is different, so each therapy session with each child will look slightly different, but with the same underlying focus - movement! I work with families to develop a list of meaningful, functional words to target through therapies such as DTTC and combine that with other approaches (e.g., phonological, REST) as needed. I prioritize a playful, comfortable environment for the child and family while also maintaining high but flexible expectations for what a therapy session, in which a high number of trials will be elicited, might look like.
Parents are involved every step of the way -- from developing a target word list, to supporting their child within a session, and facilitating carryover. Parent involvement is paramount to success.
For children with CAS, AAC can be a helpful tool to use alongside verbal speech so the child can effectively communicate their wants and needs if verbal speech is limited. For more mild-moderate cases, we may integrate a low-tech choice board. For more severe cases, we may consider a high-tech device with more dynamic, broader options.
