My treatment approach varies on age and speech/language skill level however with Childhood Apraxia of Speech it is always motor speech learning based and I always strive to make things fun and functional for the children I treat. I use pieces of different approaches depending on what works best with the child. The techniques I use most often are the Kaufman Speech Praxis Treatment approach and DTTC Approach (Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing). My therapy is primarily play based for younger children developing into a more structured task session for older children. I strive for repetition and successive trials of accurate production during my sessions to encourage motor learning of the targets. I attempt to implement shorter and more frequent sessions for CAS when possible as research supports this. My goal is getting children with CAS to communicate clearly, functionally and independently in sessions and at home. I want the children I treat to be confident in their speech skills.
I am recognized by Apraxia Kids for Advanced Training and Clinical Expertise in Childhood Apraxia of Speech Training. I was a Speaker at the 1st Annual Northwest Indiana Childhood Apraxia Walk and a Vendor and supporter of the Annual Northwest Indiana Childhood Apraxia Walks. I have attended Support Group meetings for CAS in Northwest Indiana to offer parent education/advise.
I believe it is extremely important to educate parents on their child's specific speech treatment/targets and techniques that help their child increase their speech production skills. I believe carryover into the home has to be functional and fun for the child. I involve parents by educating during or after speech sessions depending on the age and tolerance of the child. I like for parents to observe at least a portion of the sessions initially in treatment to learn techniques that may be useful at home. I want parents of the children I treat to feel comfortable implementing speech strategies with their child.
