My initial concern for my patient is gaining "effective" communication established amongst child and caregivers. Use of strategies varies depending on the child with multi-sensory cueing, DTTC techniques, successive approximations and motor planning strategies. As the child develops improved intelligibility, I continually increase expectations and complexity of their targets
This year will mark our 4th annual Walk for Children with Apraxia in Orlando. I have been directly involved with the Walk Coordinator to help with this process. I also am currently involved in the Central Florida-Apraxia Kids FB group to offer assistance to families as needed and be a resource to the community. I also have been invited to the local university to guest lecture in the Motor Speech Disorders class in which we educate and encourage graduate students to participate in the walk and educate themselves better in the area of motor speech disorders for children.
Parent educaton and participation is vital. Parents are expected to attend sessions, review and offer input on strategies/goals as well as complete weekly homework practice. I pride myself on having a great working relationship with my families. As every child with CAS is different, so is the family dynamic. We work hard to create the most effective communication within the child's natural environment and cannot do that without direct parent involvement. Parents are able to participate directly in therapy sessions, observe from an adjoining room and/or participate in collaborative homework assignments. Due to the nature of my office, we are able to consult with other practitioner regarding goals, IEP's and assessments via phone conferences or email, but we are unable to attend IEP meetings directly
