When I work with a child with CAS or suspected CAS, my therapy style is very playful with a focus on building confidence, while employing evidence-based intervention strategies. I recognize that working on Motor Speech Development is extremely challenging and I acknowledge the courage and tenacity it takes for my clients to participate and thrive in Speech Therapy sessions. I provide ample parent support and training so families can support their children on this journey.
I have worked with children with CAS or suspected CAS for over 10 years. My involvement in this community evolved very organically, when I started receiving frequent referrals for children who were not successful with traditional Early Intervention language strategies. I developed a reputation for being able to support children who had suspected motor planning difficulty. These are now my favorite children to work with! I maintain correspondence with many of my former families and participate in the Apraxia Walk whenever possible. It is a joy to see how my former clients have blossomed over the years.
I prefer to have parents in the room with me while I provide therapy, unless we determine together that the child will do better if their parents only attend the last part of the session. I view parents as a critical part of success in Speech Therapy and strive to support them to the best of my ability. My goal is to equip and empower parents with strategies that they can weave into their existing family routines in order provide the highest level of support as children progress through Speech Therapy.
I use manual sign, photos, and pictures to support functional communication skills. I am moderately familiar with TouchChat and can support children with the use of this application.
