Creating an individualized plan for each child is necessary. I work closely with every child to determine their current phonetic inventory, as it is important to determine what sounds are successful for the child. I generate a small specific set of words that will be practiced using a motor-planning approach and the principles of DTTC. I prioritize including the family and collaborate on what words will be functional and meaningful for their child. Depending on the child, I will incorporate other types of treatment approaches including using tactile prompting when needing (e.g., touching their face to help provide more input). When appropriate, I incorporate AAC communication within treatment to provide successful communication across all settings for my client.
I have completed DTTC training, PROMPT training, and LAMP AAC training which I incorporate into my therapy approach daily.
I am participating in this year’s Apraxia Kids walk and am very excited to become more involved with the apraxia community. Over the past 5 years, I have worked in private practice and have contracted with our local Regional Center to provide for services to children 0-3 years of age. When working with a child suspected of apraxia, I will provide education and local resources for them. I currently work at a private clinic that specializes in childhood apraxia of speech.
Parents sit in for every session at our clinic. I provide education and training to our parents and encourage involvement in all areas of their child’s treatment. We also provide support to our families by collaborating closely with other service providers (e.g. ABA, speech, school services).
I have used a variety of different AAC systems for my clients including low-tech and high-tech systems. I will use AAC to help support a child’s communication so they can effectively connect with others across all settings. I have completed formal training in the AAC program LAMP as well as PECS Level 1 training.
