Once a child is assessed and current level of functioning is determined, it is most important that the clinician makes the child successful which builds the child's confidence and increases verbal output as a result. Specifically, programs should provide frequent and intensive practice. It is also essential that parent education is provided. Parents should have the opportunity to observe therapy and ask questions.
I am a member of several apraxia Facebook forums, including Apraxia Kids, Childhood Apraxia of Speech for SLPs, PROMPT and Special Needs Networking in Los Angeles where parents can reach out to allied professionals.
Parents are invited into therapy sessions and encouraged to ask questions. Parents are often provided goal themselves. For example, parent will independently implement speech strategy during a specific routine.
