My treatment approach depends on the child’s needs. Generally, I use a variety of cueing to establish sound, which includes visual (pictures or visual model), tactile or kinesthetic (using PROMPT) and or verbal cues (to label and describe sounds). Typically, I use more cues and prompts to establish sounds and then fade them as quickly as possible to increase the child’s independence. I always attempt to integrate the child’s interests into therapy sessions. Additionally, I strive to make target words functional for the child. I strongly believe that speech therapy should be both fun and functional! I always provide a home program for families that they can easily incorporate into their busy lives. I strive to work as a team with the child’s caregivers, teachers, and physicians.
I have completed the Apraxia Kids Boot Camp intensive training on CAS. I continue to keep in touch with the colleagues I met at Boot Camp to continue to improve my clinical skills. I am also getting the word out locally that I have expertise in this area.
Parents and caregivers are welcome to attend speech therapy sessions. I believe that parents know their children best and therefore often know if their child will work best with or without them being present during the session. Regardless, I am passionate about providing homework that parents can easily complete at home with their child. I constantly get feedback regarding homework so that I can make adjustments as needed. I enjoy empowering parents and caregivers so that they feel confident when helping their child at home. I also believe that building a strong rapport with the child is imperative to their success in therapy. At the end of each session, I will provide homework and strategies to parents and caregivers. I will also refer a child for OT or PT and/or feeding assessment/intervention if needed.
