I have designed a CAS protocol for Spanish speaking children integrating evidence based approaches which I presented in Apraxia National Conference 2016. The therapy sessions have a lot of fun with reinforcing activities, but with a lot of speech repetitions, dynamic clues to help the children and orientation to the parents about how to give follow up at home. The parents are an essential part of the team.
I have been for more than 10 years writing articles about CAS which have been published in the mayor newspapers and magazines in my country. I have been interviewed in news and talk shows in diverse TV channels and radio stations. In mission to create awareness about CAS I contacted some members of our congress and on July 2019 the law that stablished May 14th as the day to created awareness of CAS was approved by the congress and signed by the governor of Puerto Rico.
At the end of each therapy session the parents are trained to do follow up at home, I encourage them to practice from Monday to Friday. The homework is given written in a paper.
I have use PECS with nonverbal children with CAS. Every child needs an alternative communication system while we work with speech development.
