After completely a thorough assessment I will have an initial understanding of the child's known consonants/vowels and word structures. This information will allow me to select our list of target words. I typically incorporate words that relate to my assessment findings but where ever possible I include words the parents have identified as important as well as functional words/phrases. Our therapy sessions are very much play based but with the expectation of a high number of attempts at saying our target words. I will help the child achieve success by saying the words along with them at first. This support is faded until they are able to say the target word by themselves. Parents will be given suggestions on how to word on these words at home as well to promote correct use of the words outside of the therapy room. When words are mastered, new ones are selected.
I have not yet actively searched out community involvement with the exception of informing parents about the Apraxia Kids website and sponsoring a client who participated in the walk.
Observe therapy sessions whenever possible, often 'take turns' in our activities so they can practice helping their child, parents provide input on target selection, parents practice daily with their child (typically less than 5 minutes of 'direct' homework)
I typically incorporate both gestures/baby signs and picture communication at the very beginning of therapy. Parents typically have a preference for one or the other but I introduce both.
