In my intervention for children with motor speech challenges, I strive to work with families select target words that are meaningful and relevant to the child to help with practice outside of the therapy sessions. I use multisensory cues that best meet the child's needs. My treatment sessions are play-based and focus on activities (whether they be books, crafts, games, or songs) that centre the child's interests to make it fun and motivating for the child and family to participate.
I have been practicing as an SLP since 2017 and have had an early interest in pursuing training in motor speech disorders to best serve the children on my caseload. I have varied experience working for preschool speech and language initiatives, community-based services, and private practice.
Parents are involved in my therapy process from the initial assessment. I expect parents to be active participants in the entire process, from providing relevant information about their child's interests and strengths, to selecting meaningful target words, and participating in sessions with their child. Parents are already the experts on their own children, and in the therapy process, I also want them to become experts on motor speech disorders!
I am very familiar with incorporating low-tech AAC tools such as Flip N Talks or Clarification tools, as well as High-tech devices such as AAC apps on iPads to help children with apraxia become confident communicators.
