Programming is based on principles of treatment described by Dr. Megan Hodge, for children who have difficulty planning and executing the movements involved in producing speech (i.e “Let’s Start Talking”) . Through dynamic assessment goals are selected with the family based on building from what your child can do and the use of the adapted Motor Speech Treatment Hierarchy. Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) is used to facilitate motor learning and develop the ability to sequence a variety of sounds and maintain accuracy in words and word combinations. Treatment targets are practiced in meaningful, engaging activities to promote learning, repetition, and create a positive experience. Overall goals for the program include developing a child's "script for learning" (i.e. ability to watch and listen to a speech model), improving the child’s speech clarity (i.e. intelligibility), expressive language (how the child is combining words to communicate as well as implementing AAC as needed), and confidence in effectively and functionally communicating.
Treatment plans are individualized to each child/family but typically each session includes updates/home practice check in, learning activities (target sounds, words, word combinations), and clinician-caregiver discussion, modelling, and coaching to support parent skill and ability to implement home practice.
In the past I have been involved in supporting education for families and educational staff on speech motor learning disorders.. As well as advocating to administrative teams to support implementation of programs such as the "Let's Start Talking (LST)" within the schools to provide best practice. I have also provided mentorship to other SLPs to support their training and professional development in the area of speech motor learning disorders.
Parents are an integral part of the program and we (caregiver and SLP) focus on identifying and achieving appropriate goals for parents/caregivers to help them learn strategies and improve their skill to promote their child’s development of intelligible speech and language. Parents are involved in each session and supported to implement home practice between each session.
I support Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) through dynamic assessment and implementation based on the individual child and family need. This may include adding gestures, pictures, core communication boards, PODD communication books, and/or electronic communications systems (e.g. TouchChat, TDSnap, PODD). I support family knowledge, confidence, and ability to implement what is needed to support their child’s ability to communicate effectively and successfully with friends and family.
