Apraxia Kids: What are the top 3 things you learned from this training experience?
Caroline:
- Motor-Based Goal Writing and Measurement
I learned how to write goals that truly reflect motor speech principles – focusing on movement sequences, transitions, consistency, prosody, and dynamic cueing rather than accurate sound production alone. Boot Camp strengthened how I measure change in a way that aligns with motor learning theory.
- Early Identification of Motor Planning Differences
I deepened my ability to recognize early markers of CAS and motor speech differences, particularly in toddlers and preschoolers. I now more confidently analyze speech history, sound inventory, imitation skills, variability, and vocal development patterns to support earlier, more accurate differential diagnosis.
- Differential Diagnosis Across Motor Speech and Phonology
Boot Camp significantly strengthened my clinical reasoning when distinguishing Childhood Apraxia of Speech from phonological disorder and childhood dysarthria. I better understand how motor complexity interacts with phonological patterns and how that impacts treatment planning.
Apraxia Kids: How did the boot camp experience change or expand your network of colleagues/friends?
Caroline: The clinical training was invaluable, but the professional relationships that grew from Boot Camp have been just as impactful. It was both humbling and intellectually stimulating to learn alongside such brilliant, dedicated professionals, including the women in my cohort and the instructors who led the training. I connected with clinicians across the U.S. and internationally who share a deep commitment to motor speech disorders. As a private practice owner, having trusted colleagues to consult with and learn from has been invaluable and continues to strengthen the care I provide to families.
Apraxia Kids: Describe how you have implemented the knowledge you gained at boot camp.
Caroline: Boot Camp sharpened my ability to identify motor speech needs and influenced how I assess and treat all speech sound challenges.
Apraxia Kids: What is an example of how you have been able to (or plan to) use your expertise as a local resource/support for other professionals and/or families since attending the intensive training?
Caroline: I apply my expertise to enhance evaluation and treatment for families in South Suburban Denver. I present locally and nationally on early identification and parent coaching in suspected CAS, including co-presenting with fellow Boot Camp graduate Jill Hess through the Colorado Speech-Language-Hearing Association and presenting at the Apraxia Kids Conference in July 2026. I hope to continue growing in this area and expanding access to evidence-based motor speech training. Boot Camp reignited my passion for learning and deepened my commitment to evidence-based practice. I regularly read current research related to motor speech disorders to remain informed and to continue growing as both a clinician and presenter.
Apraxia Kids: What would you say to someone considering applying to boot camp next round?
Caroline: Absolutely go for it – it’s a valuable professional investment, especially for clinicians interested in CAS!! Be prepared to work hard and learn deeply. The experience is challenging, rewarding, and likely to ignite or reignite your professional spark.
