Welcome to Apraxia Awareness Month by Board Chair Claudio Capone

Dear Apraxia Family,

I hope this message finds you well. As we enter the month of May, I am excited to share that it is Apraxia Awareness Month! This annual observance provides us with an opportunity to raise awareness about childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and support children and families affected by this condition.

What is Childhood Apraxia of Speech? Childhood apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to plan and execute the precise movements needed for speech. It is not due to muscle weakness or paralysis but rather a difficulty in coordinating the necessary muscle movements. Early intervention and appropriate treatment are crucial for children with CAS to reach their highest communication potential.

Our Theme: We Are Apraxia Kids This year, our theme is “We Are Apraxia Kids.” It encompasses not only our small but mighty staff but also our entire apraxia community. From volunteers and families to speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and our Apraxia Stars, each of you plays a vital role in supporting children with apraxia.

How Can You Get Involved? There are several ways you can participate in Apraxia Awareness Month:

  1. Proclamations: Consider filing a proclamation for your state, county, or city to officially recognize Apraxia Awareness Month.
  2. Write to Your Representative: Share your personal story with your legislators. By doing so, you can help them understand the reality of CAS and advocate for better support and resources. Find your elected officials here.
  3. Letter to the Editor: Use our template to write to your local paper, church newsletter, school newspaper, or parent guide. When your story is featured, share it on social media using #ApraxiaAwareness so that Apraxia Kids can amplify your accomplishment.
  4. Social Media: Follow our social media accounts to participate in daily activities throughout May. Spread #ApraxiaAwareness by sharing facts, personal stories, and resources.

Together, we can make a difference and ensure that every child with apraxia of speech receives the support they need. Thank you for being part of our Apraxia Kids community!

Warm regards,
