02 Jan The Language-Based Literacy Assessment: Diagnosing Reading Disorders in Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)
This webinar was recorded from the 2021 Apraxia Kids National Conference.
Course Abstract:
SLPs play a pivotal role in the assessment of language-based literacy disorders, especially for children with CAS, who are at greater risk for developing difficulty with reading, writing and spelling. It is imperative that SLPs understand the components as well as how to interpret results of a comprehensive literacy assessment.
Research indicates that children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) are at higher risk for developing difficulties with learning to read, write and spell. According to the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (2001), a foundation in oral language is a critical component for development of literacy skills. To date, there have been few research studies exploring school-age literacy skills for children with CAS; however, research from the speech sound disorder literature indicates that more than 50% of children with a SSD diagnosis will encounter difficulty with language development, learning to read, and with spelling. Given few studies have explored CAS and literacy skills, it is imperative to know what goes into a comprehensive language-based literacy assessment, how reading disorders, such as dyslexia can be diagnosed and the unique and important role a speech-language pathologist plays in diagnosis of such disorders. A comprehensive language-based literacy assessment is crucial for children, especially those with CAS, to identify areas of weakness and begin intervention as early as possible to support the development of reading and writing skills.
