Advocacy Tips for Families

Course Abstract:

Parents and caregivers of children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) want to be knowledgeable of how to best support their child’s needs. This presentation described how parents and caregivers can advocate for their children in their community.

  • List 3 strategies to advocate for children with childhood apraxia of speech in various settings such as in the school, medical, and educational communities, as well as when dealing with insurance reimbursement.
  • List 2 potential collaborative professionals that could make up a team to best support children with CAS.
  • List 2 important questions to ask SLPs about knowledge, training, and expertise in evaluating and treating children with apraxia.

    1. Define advocacy
    2. Explore the importance of advocacy
    3. Explore specific strategies and resources to help you advocate for your child across different settings (medical, community, education)
    4. Identify two additional professionals to add to your advocacy team
    5. Explain questions that are important to ask your child’s SLP to advocate for the best treatment options
    6. Strategies for navigating claims and denials from insurance companies
    7. Provide advocacy related resources
  2. Discussion (5 Minutes)
    1. Speakers, facilitators, and attendees discussed the session, shared resources and ideas, and asked/answered questions.
