Walk for Apraxia Newsletter – January 2021

2020 Virtual Walk for Apraxia Overview

This past year, the 2020 Virtual Walk for Apraxia was the 12th annual gathering for supporters to spread awareness about childhood apraxia of speech and raise funds for Apraxia Kids.  Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Apraxia Kids continued to use this time to recognize the hard work of the Apraxia Stars through ceremony and celebration.  While we missed gathering together in person, having virtual events was the best way to keep all participants safe.

Regardless of the changes, Virtual Walks were held in 87 U.S. and Canadian locations across our community!  Individuals registered and walked in neighborhoods, on tracks, on city sidewalks, in parks, and virtually anywhere that made their experience special!  The virtual ceremonies spread awareness about CAS, told the story of Apraxia Kids, notified participants of the sponsors, and most importantly highlighted the Apraxia Stars.  Plus, all Apraxia Stars were sent a certificate of accomplishment, a medal, and a commemorative 20th Anniversary Apraxia Kids cape.  To view photos of the many amazing people from our community who walked, search #VirtualWalkforApraxia on social media!

While we don’t know exactly what the 2021 Walk for Apraxia season will look like, participating in the Walk continues to be a crucial way for Apraxia Kids to spread awareness and raise funds to support our mission.  Each donation we receive, regardless of size, allows us to continue serving the apraxia community as the leader in childhood apraxia of speech.

2020 Virtual Walk for Apraxia Volunteers

Volunteers are the driving force behind the Walk for Apraxia. Many may not know this, but all Walk for Apraxia events are volunteer led and directed by a Volunteer Walk Coordinator who is supported by a Planning Team. Our Walk Coordinators courageously step into this role with a heart and passion for helping us expand our reach and further our mission. Without their dedication to the Walk for Apraxia, we could not accomplish all that we do!

We cannot thank our volunteers enough for selflessly offering their time and talents to this cause.  Your efforts are making a difference in YOUR community and in the apraxia community at large.

NSSLHA Chapter Challenge – New in 2020

Thank you college students and supporters who participated in the first ever Virtual Walk for Apraxia NSSLHA Chapter Challenge!  The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is the only national student organization for pre-professionals studying communication sciences and disorders recognized by ASHA. There are 340+ NSSLHA chapters located on colleges and university campuses in the U.S.

Previously, some NSSLHA chapters planned the Walk in their area, volunteered on Walk day, or joined the Walk as participants. This year, we created the Chapter Challenge to involve more teams in a new way that complimented the Virtual Walk format, and were blown away by the response. The top three fundraising teams earned an in-depth Zoom interactive educational session with an SLP specializing in CAS and a parent of a child with apraxia.

Congratulations to MWU SLPs 2020, Duquesne NSSLHA, & IUP NSSLHA!

Thank you to all teams for spreading awareness about childhood apraxia of speech!
