UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM

Apraxia Kids is pleased to offer three free learning modules that provide foundational information and resources on the characteristics, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) to university graduate programs.

Many students graduate and enter the field without being given any information on what CAS is, how to assess and diagnose it, and how to treat it.

Apraxia Kids is providing this curriculum to Graduate Programs in Speech-Language Pathology to fill that gap at no cost!

How to access the University Curriculum for CAS?

The modules are accessed through a password protected web platform hosted by Apraxia Kids. Professors must complete the “Request Form” per semester of use to receive access codes for their students.

What is included in the University Curriculum Modules for CAS?

Each of the three modules contains a short pre-reading assignment, an hour-long recorded interactive lecture with accompanying handout, a quiz to check for learning, a survey to share feedback at the end, and a resource list.

Module 1: Characteristics of CAS
Module 2: Assessment and Diagnosis of CAS
Module 3: Treatment Planning and Implementation for CAS

These modules can be assigned all at once or spread out over a semester. Each module builds on the preceding module and allows the students to gain needed foundational information on CAS, then has resources to expand their knowledge and skills if they have a child with CAS on their caseload. The modules are intended to replace one 3-hour class period with homework to prepare for the lectures.

What professors and students are saying:

  • I think that the pre-modules helped prepare my learning for the videos.
  • Overall, the modules were very informative and they are of great clinical utility value. I like how the information is very practical and easy to apply in my clinical practice.
  • I did not have any previous knowledge about CAS, and the modules gave me a strong foundation.
  • I enjoyed the interactive style of the recorded lectures. The modules presented the information in a clear and organized manner, and I found the learning checks within the lectures to be appropriately placed and helpful for reinforcing key concepts.
  • A standout feature is the emphasis on evidence-based practices, which prepares students to apply the latest research in clinical settings.
  • Overall, the modules are a valuable addition to university-level training programs and align well with the goals of preparing students for clinical competence in the field of speech-language pathology.

This unique program was designed under the leadership of Apraxia Kids and members of the Apraxia Kids Professional Advisory Council to educate hundreds of gradate students across the US and beyond giving them critical information on CAS before they enter the field as therapists.

Programs like the University Curriculum are only possible because of the generous support of our apraxia community.
