Describe treatment approach used: I use a multi-sensory approach to treatment in a play-based developmental model. Overall, I am mostly concerned with a child's sense of agency and gaining their trust in the therapeutic process. I am well versed in early intervention strategies and help parents tune in to their child's experience so that they can partner in their treatment. I am trained in PROMPT, Kauffman, and Talk Tools for Apraxia - and use any and all of these tools as appropriate. As soon as children gain sounds in syllables, we quickly work on sequencing syllables - I sometimes use Word Flips and Moving across Syllables to help children increase the number of syllables they can sequence. We work on vowel accuracy and duration in conjunction with consonants. We also evaluate nasal resonance and nasal assimilation. As children begin to produce more syllables, we work in connected speech to practice prosody (the "music" of speech - including rate, rhythm, and intonation). I give parents specific targets and strategies to work on at home in between sessions.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: Parents are extremely involved in the therapeutic process, they are the most important members of their child's treatment team. I request that parents or caregivers attend and participate in each therapy session. I explain not only what I'm doing, but why I'm doing it, so that parents understand how to carry strategies over to home. Parents get an opportunity to practice strategies during the session. I coach parents in the Hanen model for early language facilitation, which has been proven helpful for young children with motor speech disorders. Together with parents, we find important words to include in a child's early lexicon. I teach parents how to simplify words (following the Kauffman structure) so that they can help their child say what they want to say. We work on reducing any perceived communication pressure in order to build communicative confidence in their child. I give parents specific targets to work on in between sessions.
