Describe treatment approach used: I approach therapy for CAS by finding the child's areas of strength regarding vocalization and verbalization. Building on those strengths and providing activities that allow for success at his level of ability, I increase the level of complexity while providing the necessary cues to allow for success at a higher level. As this success is achieved I fade the cues to allow for independence and generalization. Throughout the process I use the principles of motor learning, being careful to have available appropriate activities and reinforcements for that particular child.

I use a variety of evidence-based programs including the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol, Building Speech & Quantifying Complexity (Kathy Jakielski) and the Easy Does It Programs for Apraxia (Preschool and School Age). I supplement these programs with materials and activities that are specific to the child, depending on his/her preferred activities or reinforcements.

Family involvement and interdisciplinary cooperation, when applicable, are vital to the child's success. I send home activities and information for the family and suggestions for family activities. Siblings can play a vital role along with parents and guardians. Regular communication with parents and guardians is maintained for education and for obtaining information about generalization and functional communication.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: The parent is in the session whenever possible and I explain the techniques that are being used and why. If appropriate, I teach the cues that have been effective with the child and provide materials for practice with directions for their use. I emphasize that home activities should be functional and fun for the parents and the child. When necessary I schedule phone calls or a parent teaching session to educate and update the parents.
