Describe treatment approach used: I rely on the principles of Motor Learning Theory, with the application of multi-sensory cueing to promote the accurate production of syllable shapes. With the progression of therapy various phonemes, length and complexity of targets are addressed to establish intelligible speech. I use mass and blocked practice with fading of cueing and increased practice of spontaneous productions. Core vocabulary and high motivation words of the client are targeted to encourage functional communication. Concurrent work on prosody, language and strategies such as slowing down speech rate with vocal inflections. During all stages of therapy functional communication is addressed through multi-modal communication such as use of signs, gestures, iPad apps or other means.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: Parent education, participation in therapy sessions and home practice is an essential part of therapy. Parents are encouraged to be present during the session or to attend a post session conference. Parents are taught how to work with their child at home, incorporate strategies and work to develop functional communication skills.

Describe your past and current involvement in the Apraxia community? I have attended apraxia conferences and participated in an Apraxia Walk in Southern CA. I have promoted education of apraxia by conducting an apraxia workshop to speech pathologists at the Simi Valley Unified School District. I am also a Professor and Clinical Supervisor at the California State University Northridge, Communication Disorders Department, where I work with student’s and am committed to increasing their education, exposure and clinical skills with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. It is my desire to promote continued awareness through Apraxia Walks, workshops and support groups in the future.
