Describe treatment approach used: After determining a child’s word shape, consonant, and vowel inventories, as well as what phonemes the child is able to produce in what word shapes and/or sequences, targets are established. I incorporate the principles of motor learning in a multisensory, play-based, fun therapy atmosphere. Target sequences should be functional words. A LOT of practice repetitions are vital while couched within fun and reinforcing activities. Sessions are intense in the practice and work, but also in the “fun factor” as much as possible. Multiple modalities are utilized for cueing, including visual, tactile, rate, rhythm, and verbal/cognitive.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: Parents are integral to my sessions! After modelling a few exchanges for eliciting a target, the role of “coach” or facilitator shifts to the parent while I gently coach the parents to help them refine their methods. This then gives the parent confidence to ensure that speech practice is happening everyday throughout the day and in multiple environments. Parent education is ongoing.

Describe your past and current involvement in the Apraxia community? I consider it one of my highest honors to be a “graduate” of the first class of “boot campers,” receiving Apraxia Kids recognition for Advanced Training and Clinical Expertise in Childhood Apraxia of Speech. I have had the privilege of attending a few Apraxia Kids Conferences. I have attended the local Walk for Apraxia. I am a member various Apraxia Kids Facebook groups.
