Describe treatment approach used: My mission in speech therapy is to promote your child’s self-confidence. My relationship with your child will be based on trust and empathy. Each child knows that I will only ask him/her to try things he/she is capable of. And that I will give him/her the support or “tricks” needed to ensure success. To get to this level of rapport and trust I may start with few talking demands or performance demands, meeting your child where he/she is with the understanding that talking to date has been quite challenging. Speech targets are slowly incorporated into your child’s activities of interest beginning with sounds your child can already do. This approach limits the development of avoidance behaviors and ensures communication is always a positive experience. I don’t believe in any one treatment technique or program but am trained in many, and am able to implement therapy that is individually designed to ensure your child’s progress and confidence.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: Parents usually sit in the treatment room with me if their child is under 3 and learn to promote the feeling of communicative success within their child. Parents usually sit in the observation room if their child is over 3 and participate in a 5-minute parent teaching/wrap-up at conclusion of session. Parents are taught to value and reinforce their child's initiations to communicate. When a child has mastered a target form or word approximation parents are given ideas to use this form at home to promote more opportunities for communicative success with the newly mastered word form.
