I follow motor learning principles for all of my clients and utilize a combination of approaches that I tailor to each child. I incorporate a variety of cueing systems including DTTC, PROMPT, and proprioceptive input/awareness along with selecting target words/phrases that are most functional for the child. My goal is independent production of words as quickly as possible. I do my best to keep therapy fun while pushing the child to work as hard as possible that day. I pay close attention to the child's needs in the session and ensure the child ends the session feeling confident.
I attended my first Apraxia Kids Convention in July 2017, participated in the Apraxia Kids Intensive Training (Bootcamp) in August 2018, and I am the Fresno Walk for Apraxia volunteer coordinator. It is important to me to connect local families with the resources provided by Apraxia Kids, as well as to continue to raise awareness of childhood apraxia of speech and funds for Apraxia Kids.
Parents are asked to sit in on sessions as often as possible, or are provided with video examples of what the child worked on in therapy that day. Parents are provided with specific words to practice as well as specific cues to use when practicing these words at home. Each week parents are asked to provide feedback on the child's successes and struggles with modifications being made to the targets and/or the cues.
My therapy may initially focus on providing the child with the ability to communicate with the family through other methods. I utilize sign language, pictures, and voice output devices as appropriate for the child and the family dynamic. When formal assessment of applications is needed, I will refer the family to a specialist.
