Describe treatment approach used: I look at each child as a unique individually. There is no cookie cutter recipe for apraxia. The key features I incorporate into my treatment approach are repetitive drills, homework each session to carryover material targeted in therapy to home, using a variety of cues (visual, verbal, tactile), mirror work, providing appropriate feedback in a hierarchy regarding how to modify/shape each target attempt. I combine a variety of treatment programs into my therapy, in order to maximize a child's progress and figure which treatment program or combination of treatment programs the child is most responsive to. The treatment programs I utilize include: Kaufman Speech Praxis Workout (KSPT), Moving Across Syllables (MAS), and PROMPT therapy method.

Describe parent/caregiver involvement: The parent plays a major role in a child's progress in therapy. Specifically in the case of children with CAS, it is crucial that a parent receive adequate training and knowledge in how to carryover what is targeted in treatment into the home, since intensity of practice is key in maximizing a child's progress. I encourage parents to observe sessions when necessary and provide parent training/feedback at the end of each session to assist the parent in carrying over what was targeted during the session into the home environment. Parents of children with CAS need ongoing, continued guidance in how to help their child generalize the material learned in therapy into the home environment. Drills and repetitive practice needs to be not only incorporated into therapy but also into homework in order to maximize the child's gains. Therefore I encourage parents to become very involved in the therapy process through observation of therapy sessions, asking questions, practicing with the child in front of the therapist, in order for the therapist to provide feedback to the parent regarding the parent's approach.

Describe your past and current involvement in the Apraxia community? I have a relationship with The Carruth Center at The Parish School in Houston and frequently refer children to this school. I also refer children to the Kaufman-Apraxia Boot Camp offered at The Carruth Center in the summer. I also refer children to the University of Houston, Speech/Language/Hearing Clinic summer programs. I also familiar with the Houston Walk for Apraxia and encourage children and parents to participate in the walk.
