Soy Apraxia: An Update From Our Friends in Chile

Here are few questions to get started:

1). How has awareness grown in Chile over the past year?

In Chile, we feel that awareness has grown significantly compared to last year. More and more talks are being held in schools and educational spaces, families are more open to sharing their stories, and professional training has also increased, which has allowed for greater visibility and understanding of Childhood Apraxia Speech (CAS).

Additionally, last year various authorities published commemorative posts for May 14th – something we deeply value because it helps continue bringing this message to the entire community.

2). Do you have any goals for this year in Chile regarding CAS?

Our main goal, alongside Maria Eugenia, Carol, Maria Jose, Gisela, Valeska, Isabel, and Aileen, will continue to be raising awareness about Childhood Apraxia of Speech and the real needs of those who live with this condition day by day.

This year in particular, we have been working on a support guide aimed at families and classroom teachers. Our wish is for it to reach schools and educational communities throughout Chile, providing concrete tools to help better understand our children, and promoting more appropriate, inclusive support.

3). What excites you most about this coming year?

What excites us most is that as childhood apraxia of speech becomes better known every day, our little ones will have better support opportunities, especially within schools. We hope this translates into greater understanding, inclusion, and guidance for families and their children.

4). Do you have any plans for the awareness month or day?

We have several activities scheduled for this month, all aimed at educating and raising awareness in the community.

Among them are the launch of our support guide, a children’s story I wrote inspired by my daughter Agustina, panel discussions, and our awareness campaign, where many mothers, fathers, and families join in by sharing their stories and making Childhood Apraxia of Speech more visible.

5). What inspired you to write a book? Could you tell us a bit about it?

My greatest inspiration will always be my daughter and all the families I have met along this path.

Our story is called Agustina’s World: A Story About Finding Her Voice. It is born from love, the struggle, and the need to represent how many children with apraxia live. Through Agustina’s story, we show her challenges, the way she sees her family, and her enormous effort to find her voice and communicate with the world.

6). What makes the “apraxia stars” in Chile shine?

Their bravery, their perseverance, and their immense desire to be heard. Our Apraxia Stars shine because despite every challenge, they keep fighting day after day so that their voices travel far and  show the world everything they are capable of achieving.
