Treatment approach is always chosen based on severity, age, and associated deficits. For example, for children with severe speech deficits due to CAS, I use Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) (REST is used for children with mild-moderate deficits due to CAS). Before beginning treatment, I make sure the child is able to focus attention on my face for a few minutes, be able to attempt direct imitation, and has good family support and participation. I then choose stimuli for practice based on vowel errors noted and the child's current phonemic repertoire. The child then has the opportunity to practice motor planning processes. Level of support depends on the child's needs and may start with immediate repetition. If the child can repeat utterance, then immediate repetition will be done again. If not, then simultaneous production will be used. Overall, the focus of therapy is movement gestures.
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist that provides evaluation, therapy, consultation and family education in various settings (Public School, Hospital, and Home Health).
Parents are part of the ARD team and an integral part of therapy. Education is provided through an open line of communication.
AAC has been used to help decrease stress when attempting to communicate by allowing the child to use the AAC when listeners have difficulty understanding an unintelligible utterance.
