Every child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) has their own strengths and weaknesses, so I aim to look at the child at a whole and see how I can best support their underlying difficulties while creating fun and engaging treatment sessions. In the beginning, sessions may be short and frequent, but as your son or daughter succeeds and makes progress, sessions may be longer and less frequent with more chances to practice at home.
Parents are welcomed and encouraged to watch therapy at any point in the treatment interval to see how they can best help their son or daughter at home!
Depending on the needs of your child, I do incorporate both low and high tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (i.e. picture cards, iPad, etc.) in order to give the child a way to communicate their wants/needs before they have mastered verbal communication. It is used in addition to verbal speech, not as a replacement.
