In therapy for a child with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), I focus on helping your child learn the appropriate movements and movement patterns needed to speak more clearly. I utilize a dynamic approach to help your child produce speech more consistently and accurately, incorporating specific feedback to help your child know where their lips, tongue, and jaw are moving. Therapy is active and engaging as I also incorporate specific explanations for family when setting up a home program to help ensure success at home!
Families are involved every step of the way. I work closely with families to explain what the targets will be each session and why so you feel confident in supporting your child at home. I will also often share simple movement-based strategies and cues (e.g. how to help your child feel where their tongue and lips should go for certain sounds). I also regularly check in with families with any successes of areas needed to improve on therefore I know how to help facilitate success at home.
For some children with CAS, I utilize AAC as a way to support their ever evolving communications skills while also targeting motor speech planning and programming. I encourage all my families to continue to utilize AAC while incorporating motor speech principles as a way to decrease frustration and provide a successful way to communicate with all individuals.
