First and foremost, I develop a trusting relationship with the client. My treatment sessions are guided by my dynamic evaluation and the PROMPT Methodology. I utilize the first part of the session to warm up with functional target words chosen through my assessment information and family’s goals. High repetitions of the target words are embedded within fun, simple activities encompassing client’s interests. Various levels of tactile-kinesthetic cues are provided depending on what kind of support the client requires at that moment in time. If augmentative communication is utilized, the system (low and/or high technology) will be implemented throughout the session.
Since we were an Air Force family, we moved all over the United States. Over the years, I participated in many unique activities within the community. Recently, I volunteered at the ICAN Talk Summer Camp in Pittsburgh for children and young adults with augmentative communication. I frequently volunteer with the Special Olympics. I also offered free trainings for parents and staff including but not limited to augmentative communication, CAS, Language Ideas for the Home, and brief overview of methods included in PROMPT therapy.
I involve parents as much as possible. Realistically, not all parents can sit in the therapy session. I provide weekly and monthly thematic take home ideas. The handouts include the list of possible target words and ideas on how to add onto the words, activities that can be implemented in the home, various themed books, and free/low-cost apps if the client enjoys playing on the tablet. I understand the hectic nature of everyday living. I coach parents how to look for and offer communication opportunities providing practice within their daily routine. I provide interaction strategies (e.g. increased pause time, asking fewer questions, providing more modeling). If needed, I offer support with programming and augmentative device implementation.
