My therapy for childhood apraxia of speech looks different patient to patient. For little ones below the age of 4, I mainly use play-based therapy with specific target words that are functional in the home and other settings. While working on improving speech production, I often target communication through speech, signs, gestures, picture cards, and communication devices as needed.
Once children are old enough, therapy becomes more drill-based with play mixed in. I target specific sound sequences, as well as, words that are used most often by the patients. I like to incorporate words the child likes to use in the home and other settings to improve communication about preferred topics.
Additionally, I am trained and experienced in the use of Rapid Syllable Transition Treatment (ReST). ReST is a researched-based approach in which nonsense words are used to improve speech accuracy. This treatment is less play-based and best for patients ages 4-13 with good ability to attend to tasks.
Parents are an essential part in the therapy process. I encourage all parents to sit in sessions learn the reason behind my approaches and how to incorporate my strategies at home.
I usually will begin with providing aided language boards to use in the home. These boards include preferred toys, snacks, drinks, and other activities for the child to request at home. In my sessions, I often incorporate the use of a speech generating device to aid in communication between the patient and myself. The use of AAC gives the child the ability to communicate when their speech is difficult to understand.
