I work with kids of all ages with confirmed or suspected CAS. I have been in the Speech Language Pathology field since 2003 and have treated many kids with confirmed or suspected CAS over the years. My therapy is focused on a holistic approach that is family centered. I take into account what the child and family needs throughout all phases of therapy. I use a variety of treatment approaches based on the child's needs and current skill set. In therapy, we work on a variety of syllable sequences and movements starting with the sounds and syllables already in a child's repertoire. Therapy progresses much quicker with family participation. We begin with scheduling therapy a couple of times a week with home exercise programming sent home regularly. Over time, therapy may be decreased once the child progresses with their functional communication.
I typically speak with the family about their comfort with the parental involvement level during an evaluation. I leave it up to the parent to either be in the treatment sessions the entire time or to talk for the last 10 minutes (or so) of the session. I give the parents specific direction on how home exercise programming tasks need to be completed at home and provide necessary materials.
I have utilized picture communication systems (handmade books and pictures) and high tech AAC devices to assist with functional communication for many children with confirmed or suspected CAS. I encourage verbal language throughout the entire therapy process but also want to assist with getting functional communication in place as soon as possible to limit child and family frustration. I include the family in the AAC process based on the child and family's needs.
