I am a Speech-Language Pathologist with over 30 years of experience working with children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and their families. I am certified in the PROMPT technique, which I use extensively in therapy, and I also have training and experience with the Kaufman approach.
I am also the mother of a 29-year-old son with apraxia, so I understand on both a professional and personal level the challenges that children and families may face. My goal is to provide therapy that is supportive, practical, and individualized, while helping each child build skills and confidence. I also strive to support families throughout the process, so they feel understood, informed, and encouraged.
Parents are an important part of the therapy process. Depending on what is best for the child, they may be present and actively involved during the session, or they may observe and listen nearby.
At the end of each session, I review the goals we worked on, the progress that was made, and strategies that can be carried over at home. This collaborative approach helps parents feel informed, involved, and better equipped to support their child’s communication growth outside of therapy.
I use a total communication approach when working with children with CAS, with the goal of helping each child communicate as successfully and independently as possible. Supporting communication in multiple ways can reduce frustration, support participation, and give children a way to express themselves while verbal speech is developing.
Over the years, I have used both low-tech and high-tech AAC supports, including sign language, gestures, PECS, communication books, and iPads or speech-generating devices such as Proloquo2Go. I view AAC as a valuable support that can strengthen communication, encourage language growth, and, in many cases, support the development of verbal speech as well.
