My therapy will be individualized for your specific child based on their interests, goals, and based on ongoing evaluation data. I strive for the children I work with to feel safe and comfortable so I always want to start by establishing a strong rapport. I like to incorporate the child’s interests and make the therapy session engaging and fun while getting optimal practice trials in. I will be using evidence based research techniques to support your child’s communication and celebrate each step of progress with you and your child.
Parents are active partners in all aspects of my therapy process. I like to start by gathering background information, understanding the family’s goals and concerns, gaining information about the child’s interests, and involving them in the therapy practice. During and after sessions, I share strategies, activities, and progress so parents feel confident and comfortable to carry over at home.
I have used both low (picture cards, etc.) and high tech (speech generating device) AAC for children with CAS to give them access to communication and interactions with those around them. I have implemented AAC systems so a child can express their wants/needs, likes/dislikes, make comments, express joy, protest, etc. while we are continuing to work on their speech. This has been used in combination with implementing DTTC for a child with CAS so they have access to communication and so that they are empowered to have a voice.
