Therapy begins with a comprehensive evaluation. This includes an assessment of the child’s non-speech oral motor movements, an oral structural exam, an inventory of current speech sounds, a standardized articulation assessment, and a standardized motor-speech assessment.
After the evaluation is completed, our team meets with the family to discuss the diagnosis, explain the treatment methods that will be used, and outline expected progress. Therapy initially occurs multiple times per week in short sessions (20–30 minutes). Family collaboration and home carryover are essential components of successful treatment. As the child’s skills improve and the focus shifts toward generalization, session frequency will gradually decrease while session length increases.
Parents play a vital role in their child’s progress in CAS therapy. Together, we select functional and meaningful word targets for treatment. Parents are encouraged to participate by observing sessions or reviewing video examples of current practice targets. This helps them better understand their child’s diagnosis and support consistent practice at home. Therapy is most effective when approached as a team effort.
Many of the children we serve use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, including both low-tech and high-tech tools. Low-tech AAC may involve visual cards or phrase rings (e.g., give me __, help me, bathroom, all done, more). High-tech AAC commonly includes iPads with communication apps such as Speak for Yourself, TouchChat, and Proloquo2Go. Our team has extensive experience integrating AAC into therapy and supporting families in its use across daily routines.
