Therapy sessions are individualized for each child/client. Highly reinforcing vocabulary is selected based on the client and family input. Various cueing techniques, including tactile, visual, and verbal prompts are used as tolerated. Therapy is provided in a play-based or functional setting, depending on the client's age. We aim for a high volume of repetition of target sounds per session.
Parent's are provided the opportunity to observe therapy sessions. They are provided with information on apraxia of speech and speech sound disorders. Parent's are encouraged to complete homework with their child.
Parents are educated on what AAC is and are reassured that we are not "giving up" on verbal speech production. AAC is used to bridge the gap for some clients and to augment the verbal speech production of others. AAC is used even with highly verbal students to expand the depth and breadth of their express communication in the classroom.
