- Use Your Words Speech/Language Therapy Services
I use a evidenced based multi-sensory approach which incorporates the use of PROMPT to facilitate motor -kinesthetic awareness along with visual and auditory cues. I focus on using functional words that will target specific movement patterns. Therapy is tailored to each individual child and typically focus on imitation of speech sounds and syllables, developing and enhancing motor speech movement patterns, promoting utterance lengths by increasing length and complexity of speech patterns. Therapy strategies always incorporate remediation of other speech and language disorders that may be present with Apraxia.
I frequently attend continuing education on the evaluation and treatment of Apraxia. I also participate and refer to local Apraxia Parent support groups.
Parental involvement is always emphasized to ensure carryover between sessions. Parents are provided with information that is evidenced based and useful to assist in helping their child practice, carryover, and maintain the skills learned in therapy. Parents are encouraged to attend the therapy sessions and each session is reviewed and techniques are demonstrated if needed. At the end of each session the parent and client are given daily home therapy techniques to practice until the next therapy session.
If I find that my clients are unable to communicate their wants and needs due to CAS I will begin using simple sign language to facilitate their communication. Simple signs are easy for parents and families to learn and is quickly accessible to model during intense situations. I also assist my families in using a modified Picture Exchange System that can assist in wants and needs such as a specific food and/or drink that client desires.
