My therapy approach for children with apraxia is specialized for each child's unique strengths and areas of need. Following a dynamic motor speech assessment, I thoughtfully chose target words that are meaningful for the child and their family yet accessible to your child's current skills. The goal is to practice a small set of words with a high level of repetition to efficiently shape your child's motor planning skills. I enjoy getting to know your child's interests in order to make speech therapy fun and engaging at the same time.
Caregivers should be included through every step of the therapy process. Starting with the motor speech evaluation, I ensure that families feel heard and all their questions are addressed. Following each session, I provide helpful tips and ways to support their child’s communication in all environments.
My goal is for your child to have many ways to ensure their wants, needs, and ideas are shared with the world. Therefore, visual supports are beneficial for learning total communication skills. A low tech AAC option to support communication would be a core board, including picture symbols to express important words such as help, stop, go, more, done, etc. It’s important to model these words for self-advocacy during communication breakdowns. A high tech option would be a speech generating device, so a child can have access to a wide variety of vocabulary that speaks for them. Both a low tech or high tech option promote overall communication skills and can help children with CAS to feel empowered to use their voice.
